Weather and Climate
Bonaire has a steppe climate, according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification. The island enjoys warm temperatures throughout the year with very little seasonal variation. Rainfall is generally low, while sunshine is abundant.
Average temperatures are usually around 30°C (86°F). Although the humidity averages about 76%, the constant trade winds help keep the weather comfortable and pleasant for both residents and visitors.
Climate of Bonaire
Bonaire enjoys a warm and sunny climate throughout the year, making it a popular destination for visitors. Average daytime temperatures are around 30°C (86°F), while the surrounding sea remains warm, averaging about 29°C (84°F). These consistently pleasant conditions make the island ideal for swimming, diving, and other outdoor activities.
Although the island is warm year-round, temperatures rarely become extreme. The lowest temperature ever recorded on Bonaire was 19°C (66°F) in 1925. Rainfall is limited, with only a few rainy days each month, contributing to the island’s dry climate. On days when there is little or no wind, the heat can feel much more intense.
Wind and Hurricane Season
The northeast trade winds are an important feature of Bonaire’s climate, with an average wind speed of about 7 meters per second. The windiest months are February, March, and August, and these steady breezes help keep temperatures comfortable despite the tropical heat.
Unlike many Caribbean islands, Bonaire is located outside the Atlantic hurricane belt, meaning it is rarely affected by hurricanes, tropical storms, or tornadoes. However, the Atlantic hurricane season can still influence the island’s weather indirectly. Calm, dry days may suddenly be followed by brief periods of heavy rainfall.
Rainy Season
Bonaire’s rainy season usually lasts from October through December. Most rainfall occurs during the night or in the early morning hours. The rain generally clears quickly, allowing the island to dry out by late morning or early afternoon, with sunshine returning for the rest of the day.
Sun Safety
Because Bonaire receives abundant sunshine throughout the year, protecting yourself from the sun is essential. Local residents often avoid spending long periods outdoors during the hottest hours of the day, especially between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., when the sun is strongest.
Visitors are encouraged to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, even if they do not feel thirsty. Wearing a hat or cap, lightweight clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen can also help prevent sunburn, heat exhaustion, and sunstroke while enjoying the island’s outdoor activities.
Sun Protection
Because of Bonaire’s strong tropical sunshine, it is important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be applied to all exposed skin and reapplied regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
People participating in water activities such as swimming, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, or kitesurfing should use water-resistant sunscreen. Wearing a T-shirt or specially designed UV-protective clothing can provide additional protection from the sun while enjoying the water.
