Simadan and Bari

The ‘Simadan’ and the ‘Bari’ are two typical Bonairean ‘harvest dances’. When the corn harvest is successful in the spring, these two dance styles are performed with great enthusiasm by the local population.

Dance and music play an important role in Bonairean society. There are dozens of different dance types and music styles that can be admired on the Caribbean island throughout the year.

When Bonairians meet each other, a broad smile and a firm handshake are always part of the experience. Numerous cultural events take place on the coral island throughout the year, with the annual carnival as the highlight.

The Netherlands Centre for Folk Culture and Intangible Heritage protects, among other things, intangible cultural expressions within Dutch society. The Fundashon Históriko Kultural Boneriano (FuHiKuBo) ultimately aims for the ‘Maskarada’ and the ‘Dia di San Juan i San Petro’ to be included on the Dutch list of intangible heritage.
